I created this ritual in the 1990s, as a gifts for dear friends who were getting married. Ideally, the devil bash occurs before the couple says their wedding vows. The tradition continues, though more recently, I've hired piñaterias in Los Angeles and Mexico to make the paper mache devil heads.
